13th Experience Exchange on Handling Equipment at bayernhafen Nürnberg-Roth

The 13th Experience Exchange on Handling Equipment, organised by KombiConsult since 2011, took place in September 2026 at bayernhafen Nürnberg-Roth. More than 50 experts representing terminal owners and operators, manufacturers of handling equipment and components, and other industry stakeholders came together to discuss the latest technical developments and share practical experiences from terminal operations.

In addition to a presentation of the impressive Nürnberg freight village and its intermodal terminal operated by TriCon, the programme featured a wide range of technical presentations. Topics included the new EU Machinery Regulation, which will apply from 20 January 2027, and the question of what constitutes automated handling operations.

Pinar Yüzgec Elma, Project Manager at Contargo, presented energy management at a trimodal intermodal terminal. Michael Probst and Bernd Eberhard from Kombi-Terminal Ludwigshafen shared their experiences of retrofitting a remote crane control station while maintaining ongoing terminal operations. Martin Kirst from Polarith followed up on his presentation at last year’s event in Bremerhaven, reporting on progress towards automated crane operations and technical solutions to prevent the unintentional lifting of railway wagons.

Jan Wienbeck from EUROGATE Bremerhaven also provided valuable insights into the operational experience gained during the first more than 400 days of Rail Gate Bremerhaven.

Hannes Eberharter from Künz GmbH explained how artificial intelligence can support crane operators in the safe and efficient handling of semi-trailers. Felix Keppler from Fraunhofer IVI and Paul Kronenberger from CFL Terminals discussed the challenges and opportunities associated with long trucks equipped with electric dollies in terminal operations, particularly for internal terminal transport.

The numerous technical presentations and lively discussions once again highlighted the importance of practical knowledge-sharing between terminal operators, equipment manufacturers and other industry experts.

The enthusiastic applause at the end of the event provides further motivation to continue this successful series of workshops. The next Experience Exchange on Handling Equipment is scheduled for September 2027 in Ulm, Germany, in cooperation with Deutsche Umschlaggesellschaft Schiene-Straße (DUSS).
